The decision was driven by the need to establish a secure network for air travel safety and regulatory compliance.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched IATA Connect with an initial focus on the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA). IATA Connect community members will be able to access and use the platform to securely exchange safety documentation, share information, and collaborate to support further improvements in aviation safety.

Community members can leverage this platform to share critical information and collaborate on initiatives to enhance aviation safety. This platform will serve as a vital resource for African aviation stakeholders, including airlines, regulatory agencies, and safety auditors, enabling them to stay updated on best practices, regulatory changes, and emerging safety challenges.

By fostering collaboration among community members, IATA Connect will facilitate sharing of knowledge and experiences, helping build a robust safety culture within the aviation sector. Furthermore, this initiative will empower local stakeholders to address region-specific safety issues, promote compliance with international safety standards, and ultimately contribute to the overall growth and sustainability of the African aviation industry. Through these collective efforts, the IATA Connect community aims to elevate aviation safety standards, ensuring a safer travel experience for all passengers.

Around 2,300 aviation safety professionals, including regulators, IOSA-registered airlines, and auditors, have been invited to join the IATA Connect community.

“IATA Connect will provide aviation safety and compliance professionals in government and the industry with a means to make flying even safer by facilitating real-time collaboration. Whether sharing an IOSA audit report, responding to a compliance questionnaire, updating information on codeshare partners, benchmarking resources, or information gathering, IATA Connect will bring new efficiencies and greater capabilities. By collecting critical IOSA audit data in a single location, keeping it updated, and making the mechanics of information exchange easier, IATA Connect will be a compelling tool for everyone involved in aviation safety compliance and oversight,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

IATA Connect is strategically designed to become a dynamic virtual collaboration space for all aviation professionals, facilitating communication and cooperation among diverse stakeholders in the industry by uniting experts from various sectors

The platform is accessible through a mobile app, which features two other key IATA safety offerings:

  1. Safety Connect A secure forum that interest groups have long utilized for discussions and resources related to specific operational areas, including cabin, cargo, and ground operations.
  2. Safety Issue Hub: A publicly available resource where information on hazards and safety risks is shared to facilitate the prioritization and implementation of aviation safety improvement programs.

As time progresses, IATA Connect is set to evolve and enhance its features in response to user feedback, ensuring it remains a relevant and indispensable resource for aviation safety professionals. Unlike many other agencies, which may offer fragmented resources or focus solely on regulatory compliance, it aims to provide a comprehensive platform integrating collaboration, knowledge sharing, and operational support.

IATA’s presence in Africa

IATA maintains a robust presence in Africa, with regional offices in Nairobi, Kenya; Johannesburg, South Africa; and Cairo, Egypt, which oversee North Africa and the Middle East. Many regional airlines are members and benefit from various services and support, including training, regulatory assistance, and market analysis.

IATA partners with regional aviation authorities, governments, and non-governmental organizations to address specific challenges and promote sustainable development within the aviation industry. Ultimately, The international agency plays a vital role in supporting the growth and advancement of the aviation sector in Africa, ensuring that airlines have access to the necessary resources and expertise to succeed.
